Diffraction grating calculator12/18/2023 ![]() Incident light angles from 0 to 90 degrees can be inputted although practically an instrument should operate near the blaze angle for best efficiency. The incident angle of the light from the input slit to the grating perpendicular can be adjusted. The calculator provides parameters to customize the grating, spectrometer, and the detector array used. Expected spectrometer performance can then be plotted, including dispersion, wavelength calibration, and line width at the grating output. The calculator then models the average spectral intensity response of the grating using a scalar diffraction theory 1. These properties are needed to estimate the resolution of the device. Once the grating parameters including blaze angle are selected, the spectrometer physical properties need to be inputted. A message is displayed indicating which design element is limiting the grating resolution. ![]() It also calculates the resolution set by the pixel size on the output arm of the spectrometer. The calculator attempts to estimate the resolution of the grating spectrometer by calculating the diffraction of light from the entrance slide through the input arm to determine the illuminated portion of the grating. This is the maximum resolution of the device, in practical terms the entrance and exit slit size and arm length, aberrations in grating and optics manufacture and étendue (light transmission through the spectrometer) will limit the resolving power of the instrument. Where λ is the wavelength of the central peak, dλ is the width to the first minima, k is the ruling period, n is the order, W g is the illuminated width of the grating and N is the number of illuminated rulings. The number of illuminated grating rulings determines the resolving power of the grating. Light enters through an input slit and expands through diffraction to fill the grating. ![]() The LightMachinery grating model is based upon a Czerny-Taylor monochromator or spectrometer with input and output legs of equal length, Figure 3. This technique allows the light in one order to be maximize while suppressing the residual power in other orders. The efficiency that the grating diverts light into a particular order can be modified by varying the angle of the ruling surface to the grating perpendicular. Where ∝ is the angle between the incident light and a perpendicular to the plane of the grating, β is the angle between the diffracted light and a perpendicular to the plane of the grating, k is the period (mm/line), n is the diffraction order and λ is the wavelength. The angle of dispersion for a given wavelength of incident light is determined by the period of the rulings according to: As such the dispersion equation must include both incident and diffracted angles. The model chosen for this calculator estimates the performance of a reflection grating with regular ruled lines. A specific wavelength of light is diffracted into multiple angles which correspond to constructive interference. Where Ɵ is the diffracted angle, d is the slit spacing, n is the order and λ is the wavelength of the diffracted light. The equation for double slit diffraction is: As with a pair of slits, the diffraction of light from a grating occurs as a result of constructive and destructive interference of light.įigure 1, Diffraction Orders from a Double Slit This structure can be regular slits or index variations in transmission or ruled lines in a mirror surface in reflection. ![]() Reference papers used in the development of this calculator can be found in the Bibliography at the end of this note.Īn optical grating acts as a wavelength dispersive element by diffracting or refracting light from a periodic structure. The tool calculates grating performance using a scalar theory of diffraction 1. The LightMachinery Grating calculator is a simple design tool for determining the approximate performance of a grating, taking into account basic grating parameters like blaze angle, ruling period, and length. Grating based spectrometers and monochromators are industry staples for spectral analysis. ![]()

Mla signal phrase12/18/2023 ![]() ![]() It is suggested that you provide the author and potentially title of the work in a signal phrase (see sidebar), so your parenthetical citation can just include information such as page number or act and scene number. Your parenthetical citation comes at the end of the dialog. When a new character speaks, start their dialog in the same fashion on a new line. ![]() Follow with the line of dialog, including any pieces of stage direction. Include the speaker's name in all caps at the beginning of each line of dialog, indented half an inch and followed by a period. There are additional rules to citing from sources that provide a dialog between two or more participants. Always include an abbreviated title of the book of the Bible, chapter(s), and verse(s) in your citation. If using the same translation throughout the paper, you can leave out the version in later citations. If you are citing from the Bible, include the translation you are using in your first citation. If you only use one volume, there is no need to include the volume number. Put a space after the colon and then provide the page number(s). When citing from more than one volume of a multivolume source, include the volume number followed by a colon. (Lightenor, "Too Soon" 38) (Lightenor, "Hand-Eye Development" 17) Remember to put short stories and articles in quotation marks and books and films in italics. If you cite more than one work by the same author, include a shortened version (if needed) of the title of the work in the citation. If they share the same first initial, include their full first name instead. If you are referencing two different authors who have the same last name, include their first initial to differentiate. If you are citing from an anthology or collection with works by multiple authors, cite the author of the internal source- the article or essay which you wish to reference, not the anthology or collection as a whole. If you have no known author for a source, identify the source by the title and include a page number if available. Where appropriate, abbreviations are acceptable so as to avoid overly long parenthetical citations- so instead of National Geographic you may say Nat'l Geo or Nat Geo. If your source is from a corporate author- an article published by National Geographic as an institution, for example- it is acceptable to use the corporation's name as the author. Include the period after 'al' here otherwise, no punctuation is needed in the citation. If the work has three or more authors, list the primary author followed by 'et al.'. If you are citing a work with two authors, list both authors' last names separated by an 'and'. ![]() You should use no punctuation in such a citation, as seen below. If not using a signal phrase (see sidebar), your parenthetical citation should include the author's last name and the page number (or numbers) on which the information you are referencing appears. When citing from a source which has both an author and a page number, include both in your citations. Many sources you use will have page numbers- beyond books, most periodicals and scholarly journals provide you with numbered pages. ![]()

This is a compact kayak that can be great for smaller bodies of water, such as ponds and narrow rivers. However, the Swifty has quite a low profile so you may find it’s less enclosed than some other sit-inside kayaks, meaning you may still be exposed to the elements or splashes. Having a sit-inside design, it can be a good choice for paddling in all seasons, with the enclosed cockpit helping to provide a little extra protection from the elements compared to a sit-on-top kayak. Bagpipe player for funeral12/18/2023 ![]() ![]() A bagpipes sound is commonly heard during funerals to bring the deceased soul to heaven and to bring sorrow to the ceremony. As part of the Emerald Society, a Irish fraternal organization, bagpipe bands with over 60 uniformed members march and play the pipes as part of solemn ceremonies. Honoring The Departed: Bagpipes Lead The Way To Heavenīagpipes have become a fixture at police and firefighter funerals, serving as a respectful and dignified way of saying goodbye to those who have died. ![]() As a military ceremony, it is also played in England and parts of the British Empire. A kilt and tunic are now the traditional Scottish or Irish dress of bagpipe players. The bagpipe was popularized during military ceremonies by Scottish Highland regiments that played it. Irish immigrants flooded the United States following the Great Potato Famine of 1840. In traditional Celtic cultures, bagpipes played an important role in weddings, funerals, and celebrations. Since Scottish immigrants brought the bagpipe to the United States over a hundred and fifty years ago, it has become an emblem of respect for fallen heroes, particularly firefighters and police.īagpipes are frequently played at the funerals of police officers, firefighters, soldiers, and other state workers. Why Do They Always Play Bagpipes At Police Funerals? ![]() Music is a powerful way to honor and remember the life of a loved one, whether it is a classic or well-known song or something more personal. While a bagpipe is being played, the traditional tunes are “Danny Boy” and “Amazing Grace,” but the ideal song may not be appropriate if the deceased has Irish roots. A bagpipe is also an iconic symbol of mourning, particularly for police officers and firefighters. According to SunLife’s 2021 Cost of Dying report, one out of every 25 funerals is dedicated to this 1969 hit as a final tribute. Honoring The Life Of A Loved One: ‘my Way’ And BeyondĪt a funeral, the most frequently heard song is ‘My Way’ by Frank Sinatra. SunLife has created a Funeral Song Generator that allows users to choose from a list of funeral songs. Three of the top five songs for sending off were hymns. Lord of all Hopefulness was ranked sixth on the list of top ten songs that funeral services typically play. A hymn is the most common’send-off’ music used at funerals, but a song is not usually used. “Amazing Grace” is said to have four distinct meanings.Īccording to SunLife’s analysis, the song most likely to be played at a funeral is “My Way.” ‘ Time To Say Goodbye’ by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli is the most popular song in the second position. The bagpipe song “Amazing Grace” is commonly heard at memorial services in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to helping to comfort loved ones and raise smiles, uplifting funeral songs can provide a sense of peace. It is critical to recall his favorite songs or favorites from his childhood and share them with your friends and family. For a father’s funeral, popular songs include: Funeral songs for nan. For father’s funerals, popular songs include Father’s Day and A Farewell To Arms. There are a few funeral songs that are appropriate for the funeral of a mother listed below. Your mother’s funeral arrangements will include funeral songs or music that will be played during the service. The song’s lyrics call for “a better life,” as well as a call to humanity.Ĭlassical pieces have become more popular during funerals in recent years, with Beethoven’s Adagio becoming one of the most popular. ![]() Dignity is the title track from Deacon Blue’s debut album Raintown, which was released in May. When he was 14, Paul McCartney dreamed about the death of his mother and wrote Can’t Help Falling In Love as a result. Wind Beneath My Wings, a song performed by Bette Midler for the film Beaches’ soundtrack, was nominated for Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 1990. Due to the changing nature of funerals, songs from the past are being played at services in order to reflect the deceased person’s life. Some uplifting and happy funeral songs would be ideal, while others would be better suited to classical music. You have complete control over the type of music you want to hear at a funeral. So, what music do they typically play at police funerals? Music may be used to pay tribute to the fallen officer, to commemorate the service of law enforcement personnel, and to encourage reflection and contemplation. While the rituals of such services may vary from country to country and from police department to police department, music often plays an important role in these memorials. Police funerals are solemn occasions to honor the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. ![]()

30 days writing challenge12/18/2023 ![]() ![]() In fact, any setback can cause an aspiring author to hang up his writing hat for good.Īnd that brings this story to the present.Īs a Certified High Performance Coach and transformational coach, I want to help writers and authors succeed long term…not just for a month. Being a Writer and Authorįailing at such a month-long writing event can impact a writer for years-even forever. In general, the inability to complete the challenge makes them feel lousy about themselves. But, if participants fail to finish writing a book in 30 days, their participation has the opposite effect and lowers their confidence level. Events like NaNoWriMo and the WNFIN Challenge are meant to increase productivity and confidence, and they do…if the participating writers succeed. I could see how starting and quitting-rather than finishing-a nonfiction book writing challenge was harmful to an aspiring writer’s or author’s confidence and self-esteem levels. That discouraged them from trying again at another time during the year, the next November…or ever. They would start the WNFIN Challenge strong and then, as Thanksgiving Day got closer, peter out and quit. ![]() Other writers would bemoan the fact that November was not the greatest month for a challenge for them either. Thanksgiving holiday, but I often travel to Germany that month. Plus, at least for me, November is a lousy month to participate in (or run) a writing challenge. The event took too much of my time and energy even when I pared it back to just a semblance of its original self. Honestly, I never got much writing done in November-blog posts and emails, yes…book manuscripts, no. I knew there were better ways to consistently write-or start and complete a nonfiction project-than with a 30-day writing contest or challenge. Yet, others felt discouraged and disappointed in themselves. Some of those who didn’t complete the challenge were happy with what they accomplished. I would receive grateful emails afterward from writers who finished a book…finally…by participating in the WNFIN Challenge. Some writers adored it and accomplished a lot. I’ve considered shutting down the challenge for several years now. Yet, most got something out of their efforts to start and finish a work of nonfiction in a month. While people joined WNFIN from all over the world, the challenge didn’t attract thousands of participants-more like hundreds. Even when I sold coaching programs or a summit during the event, the income generated barely covered my expenses, time, or effort. I started the event simply to give myself and other nonfiction writers a legit challenge of their own while novelists were doing NaNoWriMo. (Learn more about the history of this event here.) I’ve run it every year since in one form or another. The year after I participated in NaNoWriMo, I gave birth to the Write Nonfiction in November (WNFIN) Challenge, aka National Nonfiction Writing Month (NaNonFiWriMo). In fact, starting and not finishing your manuscript during such an event ultimately might stop you from writing your book.īefore I take this subject further, let me provide a little more backstory. Since I’m not that different from you, I am confident you can do the same-even without a book-in-a-month challenge or contest to motivate you. I know I can write a book quickly any time I choose to do so. Those identities fueled everything from my mindset to my habits making it much easier to write a book. How did I accomplish this feat? I identified as a writer and author. Yet, I completed these manuscripts 30 to 90 days each time. In the nine years that followed, I wrote three traditionally published nonfiction books and four self-published ebooks…all without a 30-day writing contest to motivate me. Probably a larger number of participants “lost.” In other words, according to NaNoWriMo rules, I “won”-along with many other writers. I participated in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in 2005 and completed a 33,00-word novel in a month. ![]() Powering through is not the answer, but choosing to be a writer and author is. Plus, the once-per-year push to write consistently and productively for 30 days isn’t enough to help a you develop a writing habit or the confidence to publish your work. On the other hand, failing at this endeavor can have a long-lasting negative effect. ![]() The positive impact of succeeding can be great. For many, this is a once-per-year chance to be a productive writer and make time to finish a manuscript. For writers, November is all about participating in events that challenge them to write a book in a month. ![]()
